About Me
Hello Myers Park Mustangs!
My name is Ms. Simmons and I am looking forward to working with you all during this 2017-2018 school year! I was born and raised right here in Charlotte, NC. I graduated from South Meck high some years ago. After graduating from high school, I took a gap year and lived in Sao Paulo, Brazil for 3 months teaching English. It was an amazing experience. I also had the opportunity to visit New Zealand for a couple of weeks. I attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where I received a BA in Biology. Biology is my passion especially microbiology and animal behavior. During my years at Carolina, I worked as lab intern and a teaching assistant for a few classes including Vertebrate Life and Mammalian Adaptation and Morphology. I really enjoyed teaching my peers so after receiving my degree, I applied for a teaching program called TEACH Charlotte. I was accepted and began a rigorous summer program where I student taught at West Meck high school. After student teaching, I was hired at Harding University high school where I taught Greenhouse biology, biology, and IB/MYP biology. My love for science continued to flourish in the classroom. I was so happy to teach young people about science and get them interested in exploring this awesome discipline! After 2 years of teaching at Harding, I transferred to North Meck for 3 years continuing to teach biology as well as environmental systems and societies. Finally, I decided it was time for a change and I am proud to say that I am now a fellow Mustang!
I love traveling! During summer of 2014 I backpacked through Europe alone for about 9 weeks exploring a total of 10 countries and over 30 cities. It was an experience of a lifetime! The following summer, I backpacked through Thailand, Cambodia, & Laos for 6 weeks which was an incredible journey. I have many stories I can't wait to share with you all. When I'm not nose deep reading our biology textbook, I also enjoy reading Agatha Christie novels, eating sushi, hiking, being outdoors, and playing poker for fun.
